This project has grown from strength to strength now including three schools.  The project is led by Maria Botha and her team consisting of Thembisa Ntshongontshi, Noluvuyo Nteta and Siyatheba Nteta.  There are 120 learners in the program (40 in each school).  They are trained in the Suzuki method which leans strongly on mother tongue teaching, one of the reasons why this project is so successful.

The more advanced group of learners preform regularly and has entertained and amazed audiences with their skills, passion and utter enjoyment for what they do.  The project has a dual purpose in that it brings training to learners in previously disadvantaged areas, but it also serves to provide a training platform for upcoming violin teachers as the CPO is actively involved in developing the education team through consistent training and mentoring.  Special mention needs to be made of the three schools Headmasters, staff and parent community that play a key role in these projects success. Involving the whole community in this project is key to its success.

 They have gone the extra mile in supporting this program and needs to be congratulated on their schools involvement and progress. We are now working towards securing enough instruments so that each learner can have his/her own violin to practice on at home.

Formal Theory tuition will be included in this program by the start of next term as to equip the learners with all the skills needed to progress to taking music as a school subject in the High School. Mr Louis van Loggrenberg (South African theory book author) in partnership with AllMusic will be providing all our learners with theory books at cost.  We are also working on translating his book into Xhosa as to provide theory lessons in their mother tongue language.

Exposing the learners to other young violinists is very important.  We therefore took 10 young learners from Siyabulelo Primary to listen to a Strings Concert presented at the Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre.

Creating long-term sustainability is absolute key to this project’s success.  We are putting all measures in place to ensure that these learners can be our future musicians!

Masidlale Recorded for Cool Classic Kidz on Fine Music Radio (aired 27/08)

5 Masidlale learners were selected by Maria to record for the Cool Classic Kidz program on Fine Music Radio.  They were taken to the studio and recorded with piano accompaniment (for the first time ever) like true professionals.  Each one also did a short interview.  After the program was aired a person called into the station inquiring about the project.  Many listeners AND FMR personnel did not know that CPO had a strings project – but they certainly do now.

10 children from Masidlale played at a function at the Grand Café.  They were very well received and did an excellent job.  All our teachers and project leader performed with them.

Sonwabo School Concert

Nolovuyo organized a school concert at Sonwabo Primary.  The rest of the school was so excited that they all joined in and eventually presented a Heritage day concert at the Gugulethu Community hall.  We had to take violins over from the other schools since this was the first time that all 40 students performed together.  They also accompanied the choir.  The Violin students’ parents attended and had the opportunity to see them perform.  Congratulations to Nolovuyo for all the arrangements and hard work!

 Siyabulela Primary performed at the opening of the Langa Museum

The learners of Siyabulela Primary, under Siyathemba’s direction, had their first public performance.  They performed at the City of Cape Town’s opening of the Langa museum and had the Mayor as an audience.  They did exceptionally well as this was their very first performance and they have only been doing violin since the start of the year.  Some learners from Hlengisa Primary also performed.  We made a point of giving other learners in the program to also have the opportunity to perform – for many it was also their first!

Masidlale performed at Showcase Concert

16 learners performed at the CPYO Outreach and Education Showcase concert as curtain raiser to the CPYO and CPYWE.  Transport was also provided to their parents and teachers.  Special mention needs to be made of our driver Mogamat Davis, who started with transport at 7:00 Saturday morning and dropped off the last people at 23:00.

It was very important for us to include their parents in this concert so that they can experience first-hand what their children are involved in.  The Masidlale learners also had the opportunity to listen to the Orchestra’s and see their teachers perform in an orchestra.  They played very well – once again it was a first to many of them.

Masidlale Performed at Centre of the Book for the

Young Presidents Organization 17 November 2011

Masidlale was invited to perform at Centre of the book by the Young Presidents Organization.  Eight senior students were selected for this performance as it was within their school exams, but they still committed to giving a superb performance. Very positive feedback was received.

First Ever Music Exams at Sonwabo, Hlengisa and Siyabulela Primary

All Masidlale project learners played their very first music exams.  Some of the less advanced learners were evaluated in a group class but all the advanced students played an individual exam.  Some were very nervous since they are accustomed to play in a group but all did very well.  It was now possible to evaluate all 120 learners and identify the leaners that showed exceptional talent.  Care will be taken to fast-track these learners. All learners will receive a music report that provides them and their parents with valuable feedback and encouragement.

The launch of the first Suzuki Teachers Training Course in Cape Town took take place at the Tea Room in the Company Gardens on Sunday, 11 December at 17:00.

This event included a public  Suzuki masterclass which will be attended by violin teachers from South Africa, Canada, America and Europe. It gave violin students in the city and children from the Masidlale Music Teaching Project in Langa, Nyanga and Guguletu an opportunity to participate in this very special event and attain valuable experience.

Maria Botha, the CPO’s Masidlale Project Leader says, “The event is to celebrate the achievements of the violin students who have attended classes throughout the year”.

CPO’s two youth ensembles showcase concert with popular shorter orchestral work.

Cape Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (CPYO)

The Cape Philharmonic Youth Orchestra was launched in 2004 and most of the members of the CPYO come from previously disadvantaged communities. The members of the professional orchestra are committed to a programme of teaching and training the young musicians through coaching and one-on-one tuition.

This flagship of the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra’s Outreach and Education programme has made great strides under the leadership of Alexander Fokkens since his appointment as resident conductor of the CPYO in 2006. Some of the CPYO’s performances include the orchestra’s debut at the First Cape Town International Summer Music Festival (November 2006) and all the subsequent Cape Town International Summer Music Festivals. The CPYO regularly performs full-length showcase concerts together with the CPYWE and their performances at the Grahamstown National Arts & Schools Festivals have been very successful. The CPO Education showcase concerts take place quarterly when the CPYO performs with the CPYWE. During the past three Cape Town International Summer Music Festivals, members of the CPYO have performed side-by-side concerts with the CPO. Four CPYO members were included in the CPO’s USA tour.

Cape Philharmonic Youth Wind Ensemble (CPYWE)

The Cape Philharmonic Youth Wind Ensemble made its debut before a local audience on 1 May 2004 and has become a well-established group participating in many concerts with the CPO but also performing on its own.

Some of the CPYWE’s highlight performances in the past years have included participation in the Artscape Wind Band Festival (2006) and its international debut at the First Cape Town International Summer Music Festival (November 2006) and subsequent festivals. The ensemble also performed during the Mayoral Welcome (an event which welcomes dignitaries attending the Opening of Parliament) in Feb. 2007 and at the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport’s Artistic Showcase at Artscape in May 2007.

In 2005 & 2007 the ensemble performed with the visiting Dutch group Brass Band Schoonhoven (BBS) at the V & A Waterfront and in Bands in Concert at Artscape (the latter concert also featuring Windworx).
The CPYWE is privileged to have Sean Kierman, the retired head of Brass (UCT) as its conductor. Sean Kierman started the wind band movement in South Africa in the 1960’s and brings a vast amount of experience to this programme. We have also welcomed international guest conductors to the CPYWE podium, namely Christian Kohler (Germany, 2007 & 2008) & Dr John Stanley (USA, 2009). John Rojas, Head of Winds at Beau Soleil Music Centre conducted the CPYWE at the showcase concerts in 2009 & 2010. Showcase concerts take place quarterly at various community venues.
The CPYWE undertook its first tour in 2010 where it participated in the Mandela Bay Festival of Sound, in Port Elizabeth. The ensemble received a Certificate of Participation as well as the Best Ensemble as Voted by Peers.

Masidlale have been involved in many projects this term.  They have been to NVC studio’s to record a program for Cape TV that will be broadcasted within the next month.  18 Learners played in the Artscape Foyer before Pretty Yende’s concert.  This was very well received and also led to the being booked for another Outreach event.  10 Learners will be playing at the Photo Exhibition of the “Iwasshot” project which provides street children with the opportunity to learn about photography.  The Masidlale project will also be featured on Cool Classic Kidz this month on Fine Music Radio.  5 Learners will have the opportunity to record in a professional studio (MusicatWork) and to hear themselves on the Radio.  This will be broadcasted on Saturday 27 August at 13:45 on FMR101.3.

 Local audiences should diarize the 23 July when Canadian musicians of the Trio Fibonacci presents a World Premiere of a new composition by South African composer Michael Blake along with music by Mozart, Schubert and Haydn.  The Trio Fibonacci brings together three Canadian virtuosi: violinist Julie-Anne Derome (Virginia Parker Prize of the Canada Council for the Arts), cellist Gabriel Prynn (King Edward VII Foundation Award) and Wonny Song (winner of the Washington Performing Arts Society competition). For their 2011 tour of South Africa they shall apply their formidable talents to works by Schubert – Piano Trio No.1 in B flat major, D. 898, Mozart – Piano Trio in C major K548 and Haydn – Piano Trio in G major ‘Gypsy Rondo’, Hob XV:25 written at the height of their genius, as well as the World Premiere  a new piece ‘Carpet of Memory’ by Michael Blake, one of South Africa’s  most respected composers.

  Following its creation in 1998 the Trio Fibonacci quickly established itself as a world-class chamber ensemble in new music. Today Trio Fibonacci is recognised as one of the only piano trios that can perform cutting edge contemporary music alongside masterpieces of earlier eras with equal brilliance. Indeed audiences on four continents have had the opportunity to hear them give inspiring interpretations of the piano trios of Beethoven, Brahms, Ravel, Shostakovich, Schumann and others. Their stalwart commitment to the music of our time has earned them international respect and they have so far commissioned and premièred more than thirty new pieces and worked with such renowned composers as Jonathan Harvey, Mauricio Kagel, Henri Pousseur, Enno Poppe, Nicolaus A. Huber, Pascal Dusapin and Michael Finnissy. Their concert tours have led them to the Ars Musica, Aldeburgh, Ultraschall, Winnipeg and Strasbourgfestivals, to Argentina, South Africa, Chile, and Japan, to Berlin, San Francisco and New York. Trio Fibonacci has performed for television in Canada, China, and Brazil, and their concerts are regularly broadcast on Canadian radio networks. They have produced four commercial CD’s.

 The Trio Fibonacci has been guided by some of the world’s most respected chamber musicians, including Menahem Pressler, members of the Alban Berg, American, Guarneri, Emerson and Vermeer String Quartets, and by their mentors Eberhard Feltz and Michael Vogler inBerlin.

Uitkyk Primary is a school in Greyton in the picturesque Overberg district of the Western Cape.
From our front door, we enjoy one of the most beautiful vistas of any school in the country.

Uitkyk Primary is has some 62 learners, from grade 1 to 7.
We are a small school, but we take the business of teaching very seriously.

Some of our wonderful children come from less affluent homes, and we are a school who have to make do without a lot of the luxuries that schools in the city enjoy.

It must be said, however, that it remains an immense privilege to be able to go to school in such a picturesque environment.

Some mornings there are snow on our mountain peaks, and the occasional snowfall on our school grounds is not completely unknown.

As a school, we represent the new South Africa.

We do not only represent the new South Africa, but we buy into the values and ethos of our new and constitutionally guided country whole-heartedly. We had a perfect,  sunny day in Genadendal.  When we arrived at the Emil Weder High School, the grade 12′s was still writing their exams.  Thank you also tho this school and their staff for writing early and clearing the Hall for us to use.  We presented an hour workshop during which time each CCK Kid had the opportunity to tell the learners more about themselves and their instruments.  All the CCK Kidz were amazing even though they were a bit nervous.

After the workshop the CCK Kidz was treated to a lunch at the Oak and Vigne restaurant in Greyton.  Ruby and Sunelle kept us all entertained with their very funny “acting”  skills.  The bond formed between the CCK Kidz and their parents was very pleasing to experience as it was the first time that we were all together.  On that Note (pun intended) – I would like to thank the parents who tranported the CCK Kidz to all their rehearsals at The Stage and to Genadendal.  Your support made it easy to arrange this wonderful event.

At Oak and Vigne restaurant

After lunch we went to the beautiful Genadendal Moravian Church to set-up and rehearse for our performance at 18:00.  Our show started slightly late as there was a wedding at the church just before six.  The whole church was filled with concert supporters as the bride entered for her wedding.  It was such an amazing experience. As the wedding party left Coenie Visser (Festival Director)welcomed all and introduced the show.  A special mention is to be made of the very professional, well run weekend of Classical music that Coenie so passionately put together.  Thank you!!!!

Ambre is 11 years old and a learner at Bosmansdam Primary School.  She studies violin with Laurika Steenkamp. She enjoys singing and is a very diligent musician and plays chess at her school she has performed at numerous concerts.  Her electric violin is partly sponsored by Musiekwereld in Bellville.

Jean Botha is 12 years old and in Grade 6 at Monte Vista Primary School. He plays bassoon and has been a student of Carin Bam at the Hugo Lambrechts Music Center for the last 2 years. He also loves cricket and rugby and he sings in the Monte Vista Senior Choir. He is member of the Junior Wind Band at Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre and has received trophies for bassoon at the Tygerberg and Stellenbosch Eisteddfods.

Chante Daniels started violin at the age of 6.  She is a Gr 6 learner at Rhenish Primary School in Stellenbosch where she studies the piano with Mrs Ina O’Reilly. She studies both the violin and recorder at the Johnman’s Music School in Stellenbosch with Maryke Lintvelt and Rosanne Goosen respectively. She is also a member of the Senior Choir, Orchestra and an A-team Hockey player at school. Chante is a keen ballet dancer and is affiliated to the Stellenbosch Ballet Association.

KB is an 11 Year student and has already achieved many awards in Music. He has won many trophies at Eisteddfods for both violin and piano. In 2010 he passed his Royal Schools Grade 4 piano exam with distinction, he won 1 trophy at the Cape Town Eisteddfod for piano solos, 3 trophies at the Tygerberg International eisteddfod as well as a bursary for best 10 years and under (for the second year in a row). He also participated in the Sanlam National Music Competition where he made it to the Semi-finals (violin). KB is a piano student of Adri van Wyk.

Lisa Britz      (harp)                  Drifting Snow by  William T. Cameron      

Lisa Britz has been playing harp since 5 years old and has won numerous cups at Eisteddfods. She was the category winner at the Sanlam National Music Competition in 2009 and won the Hennie Joubert Prize for Unisa Grade 2. She played as soloist at the Hugo Lambrecht’s Concerto Festival in 2010. Lisa is a student of Me Jane Theron at the Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre. Lisa is a member of the Tygerberg Children’s Choir.

Emelio February  (xylophone)         Concerto in D by A Vivaldi

Emilio February goes to Milnerton Primary and is 13 years old. He loves music and art and is very intelligent. He hopes to become a musician/artist in the future. Emilio is a student of Ms Suzette Brits and the Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre.

Rone Roux     (vocal)         Forever Free by Rone Roux

Rone is 13 years old and was born for the stage.  She plays piano, organ and violin but singing is her passion.  She has been composing her own music from the age of 10.  Her dream is to become an opera singer and play Christine in The Phantom of the Opera.  She is a music student of Andre Strijdom (piano) and Ronelle Hoogenhout(church organ).

Chanson Hoffmann    (trumpet)      “Chanson for Trumpet” by Jay W. Gilbert.

Chanson Hoffman is currently a trumpet student at the Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre and receives tuition form Yvonné-Marie Brand. He is the first Trumpet of the Junior Wind Orchestra.   Chanson also excels in sport.  He took part in the Tri-score Rugby tournament in Durban.  He was awarded “Sportsman of the Year” as best achiever at Pinedine Primary in 2010.

Juvan Steenkamp      (sound engineer)

Juvan Steenkamp is 11 years old.  He is a learner at Panorama Primary School.  He has been assisting MusicatWork with live sound since the age of 6.  He is also an avid golfer and rugby player.  His love for music and sound engineering stems from growing up in MusicatWork studios.   He is trained by Henk Steenkamp and assisted today by Kyle Ramsden (sound engineer MusicatWork).

Puppeteers: Ruby Smith and Sunelle van Schalkwyk

Ruby and Sunelle are both full-time drama students at The Stage Performing Arts School in Durbanville.

The cast was directed  and trained by Sophia Wessels, Head of Drama at The Stage and script written by Adele Rix, co-owner of The Stage and skilled in Musical Theatre Choreography, Scriptwriting, Songwriting and Directing.

Lifesize Designs

Louis Niemand, Creative Director and owner of Lifesize Designs was the talented puppeteer responsible for the designing and making of our two puppets (Milan and Lilo).

Mario Nell     Accompanist

Mario Nell is lecturer in organ, piano and harpsichord at the University of Stellenbosch. He studied at the universities of Port Elizabeth, Stellenbosch and Cape Town where he completed his MMus Performers degree in 1998. He then furthered his studies under Zsigmond Szathmary at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Freiburg, Germany. Mario was the overall winner of the National Youth Music Competition in 1991, the Oude Meester Music Prize in 1993 and the Mabel Quick Music Prize in 1995. He received first prizes at numerous competitions, e.g. the National ATKV Prelude (1990 and 1991) and Forté (1994) Competitions. He has appeared as soloist all the major orchestras in South Africa. In 1999 he passed his UPLM with distinction and was the winner of the Unisa Overseas Music Bursary Competition. Mario was a prize winner during the Calgary International Organ Competition with performances in Lübeck, Germany in 1994 and Hong Kong in 1998. Besides a busy performance schedule, he is an active teacher and his students has been the overall winners of all the major music competitions in South Africa, e.g. the Sanlam-, Absa-, Musicon-, Johann Vos, Mabel Quick-, Unisa National Organ-, ATKV Muziq and Unisa Overseas Music Bursary Competitions.

Nominations open for ImpACT Awards for Young Professionals

The Arts & Culture Trust (ACT) is recognising and celebrating excellence in South African arts, culture and creativity.

ACT is now open for nominations for the ImpACT Awards for Young Professionals which will be presented at the 14^th annual ACT Awards. Artists up to the age of 30 years that fall within the first three years of their professional careers are eligible for nomination.

“The encouragement and acknowledgement of excellence is of utmost importance to the future of South African creativity. ACT is grateful to the Distell Foundation for sponsoring the ImpACT Awards for Young Professionals and we value the opportunity to support emerging artists and enhance excellence in the sector,” says Pieter Jacobs, General Manager of ACT.

Emerging artists at a time in their careers when they have shown commitment to and reached some professional standing in their chosen discipline may be nominated in one of four categories:

- Visual Art (Painting and Printmaking, Sculpting, Public Installations & Photography)

- Performing Arts (Dance, Acting, Musical Theatre & Physical Theatre)

- Music & Singing (Classical, Contemporary & Jazz)

- Design (Craft, Graphic Design, Fashion Design & Web Design)

Winners of the ImpACT Awards are selected by an independent panel of judges. Awards will only be presented if a satisfactory number of quality nominations are received in the various categories and the adjudication panel reserves the right to carry over such awards to the following year.

The highlight of the Awards Ceremony is the presentation of three Lifetime Achievement Awards to luminaries for their lifelong contribution to theatre, music and visual arts in South Africa. Past recipients of this accolade include Miriam Makeba, John Kani, Gcina Mhlope, Ronnie Govender, Peter Clarke, and David Koloane amongst others. Lifetime Achievement Winners are nominated and selected by the ACT Board of Trustees.

The 14^th annual ACT Awards is presented in partnership with the Vodacom Foundation, the Dramatic, Artistic and Literary Rights Organisation (DALRO), the Southern African Music Rights Organisation (SAMRO) and is supported by the Distell Foundation, Classicfeel Magazine and Business and Arts South Africa (BASA).
