The second Greyton Winter Classical Music Festival takes place on 12 and 13 June. Five concerts by some of the country’s top classical musicians will be performed during this festival in the beautiful and quaint village of Greyton.
A classical music festival has been held annually over the past 5 years, but it was only since last year that this festival of classical music amalgamated with the annual Greyton Winter Festival to become a fixture on the country’s classical music calendar, known as the Greyton Winter Classical Music Festival.
Apart from classical music concerts various art exhibitions are planned for this weekend, as well as wine tastings presented by top Overberg wine estates. Restaurants in the village will offer various winter dishes and meals prepared by “celebrity” chefs.
Popular soprano Zanne Stapelberg this year performs in Greyton for the sixth time, sharing the stage with mezzo-soprano Minette Du Toit-Pearce, the violinist Suzanne Martens, cellist Peter Martens and local pianist Philippus Hugo in “Pour l’amour de la Musique”
The performance of the South African Youth Choir under the baton of Andre van der Merwe promises to be one of the highlights of the festival. This concert will take place in the beautiful, historic Moravian Church in Genadendal.
Other performances include concerts by the internationally acclaimed piano duo of Nina Schumann and Luis Magalhaes in “Two Pianists , and a unique performance by South Africa’s leading organ improviser Zorada Temmingh in “Phantom of the Opera”
Philippus Hugo, local restauranteur/chef and highly acclaimed pianist invites a group of his friends every year to perform in a special concert called “Philippus and Friends”, and this performance is one of the most popular and anticipated one in the series of concerts during the festival. Philippus’s friends this year include Maria du Toit (clarinet), Hamman Schoonwinkel (saxophone) and Joachim Muller-Crepon (cello).
Tickets are available from Computicket or from the Greyton Tourism Office.
Various art exhibitions will be stage in the village for the festival period, showcasing the talents of local artists.
One of the art exhibitions to be held during the festival is a group exhibition by artists who used to live in Greyton and who made a huge contribution to establishing Greyton as the Art Capitol of the Overberg. These artists include Derric van Rensburg, Volga White, Johannes du Plessis, Peter Diggery, Marina Aguiar, David Oosthuizen and others.
Restaurants will serve special winter dishes during the festival, and various wine tastings by popular Overberg Wine estates will be staged at participating restaurants.
