Carol Thorns will be performing her show ‘Red Cello Electrified’ at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, C Venues from the 5th to 30th August (Cape Town preview 25 July, On Broadway). The Edinburgh performances will be based on her debut album ‘Fireflies In The Rain’ which was nominated for a 2010 SAMA under the category, Best Instrumental Album. Audiences are carried through a series of surreal musical landscapes that incorporate aspects of World Music and Ambient Electronica whilst retaining the richness of the cello’s classical origins.


A Cum Laude Bachelor of Music graduate from Rhodes University in South Africa, Carol Thorns has a background in cello performance and entertainment PR. Her passion for taking electric strings into unchartered territory lead her to initiate and build popular brands such as Muse String Quartet, Sterling Electric Quartet and CODA.

Her live performance is an exhilarating multi-sensory experience incorporating evocative imagery provided by live VJ (VJ (Visual Jockey). This groundbreaking multi-media format takes traditional cello to an entirely new level and has been equally well-received locally and internationally. Aside from numerous South African appearances Carol was invited to perform in India in December 2009 for an audience of 4000.

Her album ‘Fireflies In The Rain’ has established Carol as SA’s leading electric cellist and one of South Africa’s top five instrumental performers. This record was nominated in March 2010 for a South African Music Award nomination under the category, Best Instrumental Album.

Well known as a pioneer in the genre of electric strings, Carol has performed at South Africa’s top events for nearly a decade. These include numerous celebrity events (Elton John Charity Ball), Fashion shows (Cape Town Fashion Week, Durban Fashion Week,SA Fashion Week), big concerts (Kirstenbosch Summer Concert Series, Vodacom July, Presidents Cup, Fancourt Spring Ball) etc. Carol has been featured on several occasions as a soloist with the Johannesburg Festival Orchestra and the Johannesburg Philharmonic. In August 2009 she shared the stage with America’s Got Talent Finalists, Nuttin’ but Stringz, for Bidvest Year End events.

She appears extensively in the media and has been interviewed on Top Billing, ETVNightlife, Morning Live etc. Carol has been photographed for Cosmopolitan Magazine, Top Billing Magazine, Style, Sarie, Cape Etc, Destiny etc and numerous daily newspapers Her performing career has taken her beyond South Africa’s borders to the Baltic Sea (on 6 day cruise for Coca Cola), to Edinburgh for an international concert, twice to Dubai on tour and to the Seychelles for a fashion show.

Carol has shared the stage the stage with many of South Africa’s top musicians including Arno Carstens and the Soweto String Quartet (at the Elton John show). She performs regularly with her own very popular band, CODA, and with singer/ songwriter Louise Carver.
