Book Review from Allmusic

A guide to Jazz Improvisation by John Laporta (Highly Recommended)

This logically structured Jazz Improvisation method is available for C, Bass Clef, B flat and E flat instruments. They all follow the same method. Every lesson is structured to include theory (every lesson builds on the previous one) rhythm and ear training and some performance pieces. Lesson one for example deals with the pentatonic scale, legato and staccato and swinging eighth notes. Lesson two adds the concept of Lester notes, lesson three deals with the blues notes and rhythms. Lesson twelve (the last lesson) teaches the mixolydian mode and Calypso rhythms. The books include CD’s with back tracks for all the performance pieces. Some of the pieces can be performed in a group.
