First big opera of 2011 opens at Artscape
THE first big Cape Town Opera production of 2011 opens next week at the Artscape Theatre Centre. The next two weeks’ programme includes a dance celebration, two schools setwork plays and a learner workshop.

Woza Albert – March 2 to 5, 2011 (± 1,25 hrs)
THIS schools’ setwork by acclaimed playwrights Mbongeni Ngema, Percy Mthwa and Barney Simon, explores the Second Coming of Morena the Saviour and what would have happened had he arrived in apartheid South Africa. Tickets cost R40, at the Arena.

    THE Cape Academy of Performing Arts (CAPA), now renowned for superior training in dance, drama and voice, explores world cultural events, in celebration of 25 years of excellence. Tickets range from R75 to R150 at the Theatre.

    Waiting for Godot – March 9 to 12, 2011 (± 1,25 hrs)
    AN absurd play is a about two characters who wait for someone who never comes. To occupy themselves, they eat, sleep, converse, argue, sing, play games, exercise, swap hats, and contemplate suicide — anything ‘to hold the terrible silence at bay’. Tickets cost R40, at the Arena.

    BIZET’S eternally popular and delectably melodramatic homage to Spanish music, Spanish passion and dangerous Spanish women. Flamenco dancers from the La Rosa Spanish Dance Theatre and atmospheric designs by Michael Mitchell, conjure up the dust and heat of 19th century Seville. Tickets range from R110 to R350, at the Opera House.
