Brief history of the school
Edgemead Primary school began operating in January 1979. Originally the school was accommodated in a group of houses situated in Lombard Way.
The school, accommodating sub A, sub B and standard 1 pupils, had an enrolment of 98 pupils. The founder principal was Mrs Maria Lerm.
In January 1980 Edgemead Preparatory School officially became known as Edgemead Primary School as it now accommodated standard 2 pupils. Mr Michael King was appointed principal. Mr King served the school until his retirement at the end of 1996.
By 1982 the “school in the houses” could no longer accommodate the burgeoning enrolment and January 1983 saw the occupation of the present school buildings. Over the years the school’s facilities have been extensively expanded. We now have a large enrolment of some 1200 pupils who enjoy excellent, modern facilities.
Uitkyk Primary is a school in Greyton in the picturesque Overberg district of the Western Cape.
From our front door, we enjoy one of the most beautiful vistas of any school in the country.
Uitkyk Primary is has some 62 learners, from grade 1 to 7.
We are a small school, but we take the business of teaching very seriously.
Some of our wonderful children come from less affluent homes, and we are a school who have to make do without a lot of the luxuries that schools in the city enjoy.
It must be said, however, that it remains an immense privilege to be able to go to school in such a picturesque environment.
Some mornings there are snow on our mountain peaks, and the occasional snowfall on our school grounds is not completely unknown.
As a school, we represent the new South Africa.
We do not only represent the new South Africa, but we buy into the values and ethos of our new and constitutionally guided country whole-heartedly. We admire our leaders and hold a deep regard for those who have struggled for the freedom that we can enjoy. Amongst those; the freedom to associate with one another, regardless of where we come from.
At Uitkyk, we have Xhosa, Zulu, Afrikaans, English, Polish, Christian and Muslim children.
People who come to our school for the first time always says- after climbing our little uphill, that the first thing they experience when they get their breath back, is LOVE.
Uitkyk is a school built, brick by brick, on love, and love is the cement that keeps us together trough sometimes difficult times.
